Approximately 670 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an
eye examination and a pair of glasses. This is because there are not enough trained eye care personnel and there is no
infrastructure to support these desperately needed eye care services in many developing countries.
Optometry Giving Sight was created in 2003 as a partnership between Optometry and the leading organizations involved in
blindness prevention throughout the world - including Sightsavers International, VISION 2020 and the World Health
Organisation. Its aim is to raise funds for projects which provide vision care, training and infrastructure support for
communities that lack basic eye care services.
To date almost $US4 million has been allocated / disbursed to projects that have helped to screen and provide basic eye care
services to more than 3.8 million people, train 2,234 mid-level eye care personnel and create more than 100 vision centres /
optical workshops.
You can help. Please join NEG and make Optometry Giving Sight your International Charity of Choice. Take the World Sight
Day Challenge, support us with a donation tin and or become a regular donor today.
